In the past, an abscessed or infected tooth was often pulled out. Now, saving a natural tooth can be done without discomfort by doing a root canal therapy, also called endodontic treatment. An abscessed tooth might originate from cavities, flawed or cracked fillings. Pain and /or swelling may be experienced when the nerve or pulp becomes irritated or infected. An infection can be spotted by your dentist with a digital x-ray.
Root canal therapy involves the cleaning out of the infected pulp and then using a sealant to protect it. In the best scenario, a crown is put over top of a root canal to help protect long-term.
